Amatl (Nahuatl)

or Papel amate (Spanish)

Paper made from the inner bark of the fig tree by indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica.  In pre-Conquest times, indigenous peoples utilized amatl for many ritual purposes; they also used it for their books.

In this photo, the artist filled the spaces between the ribs of the vault with amatl which he had painted ochre.  To this background paper, he then affixed medallion-shaped pieces of amatl on which he had painted images.
