Tejamanil

Tejamanil refers to thin hand-hewn shingles cut from the heart wood of the pine tree.  In pre-Columbian times, these shingles were used to roof the houses of the Purépecha, indigenous inhabitants western Mexico.  In colonial times, tejamanil were placed diagonally between supporting wooden beams to form a geometrically complex ceiling.
