Stigmata (sing. stigma)
From the Greek word for mark, tattoo, or brand. The five wounds represent the wounds of Jesus on the Cross: in the hands and feet from the nails, and in the side from the lance. In 16th Century Mexico, the most common representation of the Stigmata is the stylized droplets of blood as seen in this photo. The Stigmata is a symbol of the Franciscan Order.
