Franciscan Rope

Saint Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order, after taking vows of poverty, dressed in a coarse wool coat with a rope instead of a belt.  The rope is knotted, with up to five knots symbolizing: 1) charity, 2) obedience, 3) chastity, 4) penance, 5) detachment.  This knotted rope has become a symbol of the Franciscan Order.
